I have really missed visiting art galleries these past couple of years, convinced that I haven't the time or money for many of the things I'd like to have visited. The Auerbach show in particular is one I would have loved to have seen. And the Caravaggio exhibition sounds delightful: to focus on just two paintings when we find ourselves rushing around larger retrospectives. I shared a studio at art school with a student who spent his entire third year recreating The Last Supper from a photo of Caravaggio's painting pinned to one of the few bits of white emulsion wall visible behind his huge canvas. In truth, he spent his entire third year drinking and sleeping, and not painting, but it was always a pleasure to share the space with his half-finished replica painting and that small photocopied print of the original. Happy new year, Andrew!

Your friend’s third year sounds similar to mine. Small exhibitions do appeal - giving you time to really look at the artworks. Happy new year to you too - I hope you give yourself some time to visit a few exhibitions in 2025.

Love this Andrew, thank you for sharing. Your photography group sounds great and really productive focusing on the image rather than rules and technicalities. Enjoy the new year celebrations!

Happy New Year! I can certainly get behind the Martin Parr Foundation opportunity. It is a great little space, and sometimes the Royal Photographic Society across the tiny square has something good too. A great 2for1 deal. BTW, the Graham Smith and Chris Killip show was great at Martin Parr Foundation this year. And for me the Sunderland Shows of Ian MacDonald's work was superb. Looking forward to the 80s show.... Happy, Happy!

Ah, I forgot about the Chris Killip and Graham Smith show! That does deserve to be included. I also enjoyed the Northern Soul exhibition at Martin Parr. Happy new year to you!

We took in the Impressionists for their 150th and we’re excited about some Surrealism at the Pompidou Centre in January. Not as many opportunities for exhibitions in this rural life but good to break out once in a while.

The surrealism exhibition at the Pompidou looks like it will be amazing. Enjoy!

A couple of nights en Paris will be a treat too. We honeymooned there in January 2009 and the fountains froze!

Thank you for the very kind mention Andrew. I trust you and yours enjoyed the Christmas celebrations and I wish you the very best for 2025. And as you'd expect of me, I'll offer that you can't beat a bit of Caravaggio. As a photographer do you think the master used some form of 'camera' to capture the perspective in the Supper at Erasmus....

We had a lovely Christmas thanks. Lots of food, wine and long walks. I hope you enjoyed yours too.

I’m not sure if the master used some form of camera, but I do think his use of light, shade and composition makes him one of the most influential artists for photographers.

I did indeed and I asked the question because of this documentary I watched a couple of decades ago..
