Hello again,
It’s been a while.
Don’t worry, it’s all good. Work and play have been enjoyably busy.
This has been followed by a two week holiday enjoying languid hours reading books1, listening intently to music2 and podcasts3, and clicking the shutter when I see shapes and light which appeal.
So on we go - to a mix of my photos, photographers and photobooks all in one post.
1, Photos - minimal Menorca
Let’s start with some holiday snaps of white buildings and blue skies in Menorca. Plus, to my pleasant surprise, I stumbled upon a modern cemetery made of concrete. It reminded me a little of my visit to the David Chipperfield designed San Michele Cemetery on an island near Venice.
Photographer - Michael Siirilä
’s Photosnack is a daily treat and it is he who I owe many thanks for introducing me to the wonderful work of Michael Siirilä. A “darkroom artist” whose contemplative, atmospheric photos slow me down and make me wonder. His book, Here, in Absence, is selling out fast. Be quick, it’s a thing of beauty.3, Photobook - Joel Meyorwitz
Having been on a Balearic Island for my holiday, let’s stay in Spain and have a post-siesta look through Hacia la luz - Out of the Darkness by Joel Meyerowitz.
He spent six pivotal months in Andalusia 1966-1967 where the locals named him El Ojo (the eye). Meyworwitz hadn’t yet settled on colour - many of the photos in this book are in black and white.
Where his more well known New York street photos celebrate coincidence and humour, these photos have a more edgy and documentary feel. They were made at a time when Franco still ruled the country and there is a pervading sense that the state is keeping a watchful eye on their people.
Thank you for reading and looking.
Onwards
